It was originally called The Great Mouse Detective in 1986 and it got good reviews back then and did some business but it wasn’t the runaway blockbusters like Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, not to mention the upcoming Aladdin and Lion King. It was the beginning of the resurgence though at Disney.
Apparently the alternate title was only used for this rerelease. The home video editions went back to the shorter title.
