“I hated this movie!” is arguably one of Ebert’s best quote on a bad film.

If you read the whole “hated” part, it is pretty funny. This film came out right before my dad passed away at 50 of cancer and that’s why I agreed with Gene and Roger about why this idea about a kid throwing away his parents is stupid. Roger even said in his print review the idea is deeply flawed because children do not separate from their parents lightly. That was certainly true for me when my father died, even though I was in my 20’s at the time. Finally, North will also be known forever as the screen debut of Black Widow.

Sorry for your loss! However, thank you for telling me about the review and how Roger Ebert really despised North.

It is a great review. I collect Ebert’s movie review guides, and his review of “North” is so iconic that he named a whole book after that “hated, hated, hated” line. You can find the review on his website, which has all or most of his reviews over the years. (Also, check out his hilarious review of Pearl Harbor.) The guy could write. So could Gene; I hate hate hate hate hate the fact that there’s no website of Gene’s reviews.
