Joe Vs. The Volcano is a wonderful, quirky movie that succeeds all the way through. It’s not considered one of the best by Hanks or Ryan, but I think that’s a mistake. Gene’s reaction, listing all the things he likes about the movie but he still gives it a thumbs-down, reminds me of something he said on the very first S&E show from 1975, that when a critic has high expectations for a film he (or she) is often harder on it than he ought to be, whereas he lavishes praise on something marginally good that he expected to be junk. I think that’s the case with Joe vs. the Volcano. It’s a great movie.
