I used to be a HUGE proponent and campaigner for widescreen and letterboxing. Such a total non-issue today. I think they inspired widescreen TVs going mainstream. Don’t get the credit though!
The issue now is the reverse, reformatting, cropping and stretching older TV shows to fit onto a widescreen. Either the default settings on the TV automatically do it or the show itself is butchered to do it. Notably The Simpsons which notoriously butchered the picture so badly you can’t see jokes that are being referred to by the dialogue.
