It is thanks to this insightful special episode that I now rank Robert Redford alongside Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper and Michael Douglas as having one of the most fascinating and remarkable careers of all Hollywood leading men (Eastwood for his being a “man for all seasons” artist, Cooper for his being a continual evolution of the American action hero – and his being arguably the most authentic film star – and Douglas for his topical career choices and creating an emotionally-authentic and resonant portrait of the “modern man” in the 1980s and 1990s).
All the President’s Men (1976) is one of the greatest films ever made, and the lyrical and poetic A River Runs Through It (1992) remains a personal favourite of mine.
