That was just a disappointing cheap shot by Gene at the beginning of the episode, not his first fat joke, and they’re never funny. Roger, at least, doesn’t seem to take offense; or if he does, it’s edited out. Either way it’s beneath Gene, and it’s a good example of how Political Correctness has at least done some good in our culture, because they’d never show that kind of crap today.
