  • Gene, you IDIOT! Anybody can do special effects? That is one of the most condescending and insulting this you can possibly say to film makers. Do PBS viewers in 1982 not see anything wrong with this?

    • Take it easy. It was one of Gene’s worst reviews, but there’s no need for name-calling.

      • Yeah, sorry for the name calling. But my point still stands. I also think it’s moments like this that led people to think that Siskel and Ebert hate special effects pictures, when anyone who has any home recordings of the show or read any of Roger’s books will tell you otherwise. That’s how I one of my friends on YouTube BTW, who is not of fan of Siskel and Ebert at all. The review was shown when Oliver Harper reviewed the movie and I trolled him and kept on doing so until he pointed out that nobody was attacking me for liking Siskel and Ebert. So I explained why I did and he understood.

        • I know. It’s reviews like this that can give people the wrong idea. Roger does seem to appreciate special effects a bit more, especially from ILM.

          • My friend actually believes that Roger agrees with Gene’s words when he said “Just because anybody can do special effects, it doesn’t mean they aren’t done right.” I actually can see why he believes that though, considering that special effects is not an easy job to begin with, though it is easy to make bad ones. I wonder if Gene got hate mail from ILM for this?

  • To my friend Jim Slav, thank you for pointing out that what Gene said in his Poltergeist review is completly wrong.
