I know why Tomei won for My Cousin Vinny that year. She was the only American in that category and at the time the voters had a close minded idea that foreign actors should not win acting awards in more than one category. They were going to give Emma Thompson the Best Actress award for Howard’s End so that left Marisa wide open to win Supporting Actress. I do not think I am wrong about this. Over the years, that has changed, thank God. They still have a long way to go in other things, like giving three acting Oscars to blacks in one year. They haven’t done that yet.
